U.S. Rep. Summer Lee introduced articles of impeachment against U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi on Tuesday morning, following through on plans to bring attention to the Department of Justice and its defiance of congressional calls to release unredacted Jeffrey Epstein files.
Lee, an outspoken progressive lawmaker who gave the Working Families Party response to the State of the Union last month, is joined by U.S. Reps. Yassamin Ansari, Valerie Foushee, Dave Min, Rashida Tlai, and Maxine Dexter in co-sponsoring the legislation.
Lee announced her plans to file articles of impeachment in the lead-up to the SOTU.
In the measure, Lee cites Bondi’s “defiance of the Oversight Committee’s subpoena to release the full, unredacted Epstein files,” along with abuse of investigatory and prosecutorial authority, defiance of federal court orders and perjury in congressional testimony as the alleged offenses that led to her introducing the articles of impeachment.
“The Attorney General of the United States is entrusted with one of the most solemn responsibilities in our democracy: to enforce the law fairly, impartially, and without political influence. Instead, Pam Bondi is breaking the law to protect pedophiles and prosecute Trump’s political opponents,” Lee said in a statement. “This is about accountability, transparency, and justice. We deserve a justice system that serves the people, not one that is weaponized for political gain.”
Lee isn’t the first House Democrat to put forth articles of impeachment this year. In January, Illinois Democrat Robin Kelly introduced a resolution calling for the impeachment of Kristi Noem, then Secretary of Homeland Security, for high crimes and misdemeanors.
And earlier this month, Michigan’s Shri Thanedar introduced three articles of impeachment, charging Bondi with obstruction of Congress, dereliction of duty and obstruction of justice, and weaponizing and politicizing the DOJ. Thanedar had previously moved to impeach Trump last May, as well as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over “Signalgate” and reports of double-tap strikes on alleged Venezuelan drug boats.
Although the efforts seem to be a political long shot in a GOP-controlled Congress, Lee and several other congressmembers continue to put pressure on the Trump administration for its lack of action related to the release of the Epstein files.
“It’s time to stop allowing institutions and our own government to continue protecting the wealthy and powerful,” Lee said in February.
