Winners & Losers
This week’s biggest Winners & Losers
Who’s up and who’s down this week?

City & State
What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Rutgers University researchers, examining rodent samples from Philadelphia, New Jersey, NewYork City and Washington D.C., found that mice are rapidly mutating – with many now surviving the poisons designed to kill them. As for rats, well, researchers say they’re learning to avoid traps and other extermination methods.

Philly’s Fan Fest -
The U.S. men’s national team hasn’t been on the schedule in Philadelphia yet, but that hasn’t stopped fans from showing out all around the city. Event officials announced this week that the FIFA Fan Festival Philadelphia has welcomed more than 250,000 guests to Lemon Hill since opening on June 11 – and the event leads all host cities in single-day attendance, with nearly 55,000 guests on June 19 watching the USA vs. Australia and Brazil vs. Haiti matches there.
Pittsburgh International Airport -
The Pittsburgh International Airport is flying high after receiving international attention: It recently made the 2026 Prix Versailles list of the world's most beautiful airports – one of seven airports worldwide, and just two in the United States, to receive the recognition. The Prix Versailles honors airports, museums, hotels and restaurants for “exceptional architecture and design.”
Darrell Owens -
By a 67-30 vote, Erie County native Darrell Owens received confirmation from the U.S. Senate to serve as the next U.S. Representative to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, or OSCE. Owens most recently served as senior adviser for the Office of Congressional and Legislative Affairs at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
Philly pastors -
Authorities say Isaiah Banks and Bryan Jackson – both pastors serving separate congregations in Philadelphia – are facing charges related to child sexual abuse and child pornography. The two faith leaders, according to the affidavit, exchanged pornographic pictures of a 15-year-old boy after Banks enticed the boy into sending them in return for money and food.
Healthcare fraudsters -
State and federal officials are cracking down on Medicare and Medicaid fraudsters. Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday announced this week that eight people in Pennsylvania have been charged with Medicaid fraud, resulting in more than $260,000 in losses. The crackdown comes as part of the Department of Justice’s annual National Health Care Fraud Takedown, which brought charges nationwide, resulting in a combined $6.5 billion in Medicaid and Medicare fraud.
Stacy Garrity -
Stacy Garrity must feel like she got hit by a Mack Truck after President Donald Trump failed to mention her during his rally at Mack’s facility in the Lehigh Valley on June 23. Trump, in typical fashion, blathered on about various subjects: UFC fights on the White House lawn, weight-loss drugs, even U.S. Rep. Dan Meuser’s interest in running for governor – but not Garrity, despite the fact that she spoke earlier at the event.
